ARTIST DU JOUR - Mana Morimoto's whimsical embroidered photographs

This semester's artmaking has put my artistic influences through the wringer. I'm getting more into mixed media art, and I'm drawn to Mana Morimoto's whimisical, slightly surreal embroidered pieces.

198 Yards of Blue

There's something about lace knitting that loosens up my mind. I like getting lost in a complicated chart: it's so straightforward to follow, and I love seeing the pattern slowly develop.

Pattern I used is 198 Yards of Heaven, on Ravelry as a free download.

I ordered some yarn off the internet, and wound up getting two different dye lots that were quite different... but it turned out making a really beautiful trimming effect, like seafoam at the edge of a wave. Yay for serendipity?

LAUREN'S THING OF THE DAY _ The NU Project

In the summer, with the advent of shortshorts and bikinis, I sometimes get a little sensitive about my thunderthighs and tummy. I know I'm not alone here, ladies. Even the most body-positive of us have bad days.

This photography project helps me out a little in this regard. The NU Project seeks to photograph a wide range of body types, in the buff. Its refreshing to see body types like mine in a beautiful photoshoot, because there is no waay I will ever see anything like this in a magazine or on tv.

It also seeks to divorce the often intertwined concepts of nudity and sexualization. These women are depicted in a way that seems comfortable and natural.

Here are a few of my personal favorites from the collection

A pair of lovely legs arises mysteriously from a bathtub.

I really like this one because her pose seems a little gestural and reaching, yet still sitting. The cat is also similarly gestural.
Something a little lonely about this one.

DIY Cosmetics - Honey+Sugar face scrub review!!

HOW TO:
Take two parts honey and one part sugar.
Mix in a bowl or other small container.  ( I found an old powder jar that worked nicely)
Lick spoon used for mixing, because hey, it is honey and sugar after all.
Scrub on face and legs. Revel in the hydrating, exfoliating goodness.

REVIEW:

This as my first foray into the wonderful world of DIY cosmetics. The simple recipe couldn't be easier, and my face feels soft and hydrated.

As I had just spent the afternoon swimming and was quite sunburned, however, I had some sunburned areas. Exfoliating these areas felt a little rough.

I guess that's my only caveat: Great for everywhere except recently burned skin!

SUMMER LIST

A LIST OF THINGS I WANT TO DO OVER THE SUMMER AND WHY
1. MAKE A CORSET - A girl in my Time class whipped up an entire steampunk outfit in like, three weeks. We're talking a hitched up skirt, attached bustle, underskirt, fully boned corset, leather harness and belt, leather gauntlet and hat. Lots of stamping and decorative stitching.

So I think I'm going to try to make a nice simple underbust or waist cincher sometime this summer.

2. Try oil painting.

I've always kind of butted heads with acrylic painting. Maybe oil will work?

3. Do a drawing a day for a whole month.

4. GO TO THE GYM AT LEAST TWICE A WEEK FOR AN HOUR EACH TIME.
Yeah, I've gotten a little slacked off and now my pants are tight, so it's time to fix that.

5. Learn how to cook
Because there are only so many times you can make scrambled eggs without succumbing into madness.

SUMMER IN THE CITY

The air has just turned from the crispness of spring to the solid humidity of summer.

The trees are in bloom

I can finally bask my pale legs in the sunshine

The courtyard of my school is secluded from the busy street, sunny, and grassy, and thus perfect for naps. Bring a blanket, though, or else you'll get cigarette butts in your hair

Even the dead brick walls are in bloom!

SO THIS IS WHAT MY HAIR IS DOING.

My experiment with the trendy sideswept bangs has come to an end. Every once in a while they turned out okay, but most days they got in my face and sagged weirdly.

Back to the straight bangs that I've had for half my life...yay?

At least now its long enough to play with now
