On coping

I've had a bit of a tough semester.
Two of my classes are pretentious, long-winded, and completely inapplicable to my art and life. They're also five hours long. There are classes I like, but not a lot.

So I have a few little tricks to keep myself sane during these five hour long life-wasting classes. They're applicable to other situations as well, of course.

1. Keep your hands busy. I've been churning out squares for my granny square blanket like crazy in my dull form study class.

So, even if the class is a five hour critique in which the teacher goes on a wild tangent and every single member of the class says what every single piece reminds them of from their childhood, I can still feel like I've accomplished something.

It wasn't a five hour waste of time, see, it was a good crochet session with some unfortunate accompaniment!
A beautiful product of frustration and anger!
2. Tuck a well-loved book into purse. Use as safety blanket. Read a few lines whenever you can sneak them! Find comfort in the well-read lines, the rise and fall of the familiar storyline, the soothing voice of your favorite author.

My go-to comfort books are Good Omens, any of the Harry Potters, and Memoirs of a Geisha.

3. Bring phone. Talk to friends. Maintain sanity through whining to them

4. Bring a nice hot thermos of tea with you. Sip. Inhale warmth. Taste the calm sweetness.

5. Take extended walks to the bathroom. Preferably the bathroom on a different floor, in a different building. Enjoy the walk.
